Default Puppycide

I think it's long past time for people to consider this issue. I think in too many cases officers are unwilling to allow people the few seconds it takes to make sure their dogs are safe and not a threat to the officer. We saw a case in Nashville recently where officers were pursuing a suspect through neighbors backyards and killed a dog on a chain that they were afraid of.

I can't speak to the situation about the dog on the chain in Nashville, but I found the video of the incident depicted in the article...

First, the term "Puppycide" is incorrect and I imagine only being used to incite outrage.

Next, there was an armed robbery situation going on at the time this man appeared with his dog, which is not a puppy, but a full grown Rottweiler, asking repeatedly why there were no black cops, distracting officers from the situation at hand. The cops did ask the guy to move on, and I assume this was in the interest of their safety and the man's. When the guy did not move on it was then the cops approached the man and the dog, which leaped out of car window, charged and jumped up at the officer aggressively. Yes, folks have a right to film cops, but folks don't not have the right to distract officers in a potentially dangerous situation with their stupidity.

Also, many of these dogs probably are not puppies, but rather Rottie's or Pit bulls, which folks keep around exactly for the reason of their aggressiveness...drug dealers are absolutely known for this. I have seen it in my own town.

If a cop is in situation where there is potential for harm, often split second decisions mean life or death, whom would you rather he protect, you or your dog. I'm an avid dog/animal lover, abuse of animals sickens me, but in this case, had the guy moved on as he was asked, his dog would still be with him.

This is why we have right of petition and recourse.

Rather depends on the breed. Like noted above, Rotts and pitbulls are the favourites of criminal lowlifes everywhere. Shoot on sight.

While I wouldn't choose to own a Rottie or a Pit, they certainly shouldn't be slaughtered just because of their breed. I agree that some people put their own animals in danger, but many have lost their pets through no fault of their own. And while we might have the right to recourse, it's not going to bring someone's dead pet back to life. This case come to mind.

Well, of course not. But we can get compensated for the loss.

Fortunately, the video is disabled in this link. The written article tells the story.
